I'm sure that it does slow some Macs during scanning, I haven't found an A-V scanner yet that doesn't slow mine, which is why I never conduct a manual or scheduled scan when I have something better to do on the computer. I have also found that with the use ClamXavSentry it helps to limit the number of directories being watched to those where new files are likely to show up.
