So why a sweet spot? For RAM, DDR3 has been the standard for some time. The factories are getting really good at turning out modules at a high rate so supply is plentiful. When Skylake is released, it will for DDR3L and DDR4 RAM so factories will shift toward that. Also, as seen on many current Macs, removable modules are becoming a thing of the past as well. The standard will become soldered and removable modules won’t need to be made anymore.
But it is, of course, possible to use an SSD in an external enclosure. I went that route, and solved the slowdowns. The many choices for external SSD I came at this problem not wanting to buy a new Mac yet, and also wanting to keep the cost to about $300, while getting something I would reuse with a new computer or for portable storage later. To get a comparable mini with the same amount of storage and memory would cost at least $700, and that’s without a built-to-order Fusion drive (HDD/SSD combo), but a regular hard drive. (There’s no SSD option from Apple.) has four USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 800 port, and Thunderbolt. An SSD connected over Thunderbolt seemed like overkill, and I was already powering one display with the built-in HDMI port and another via DisplayPort using the Thunderbolt connection.

The maximum tops out at just above 11GB, when it used to approach 15GB or more. This is inexplicable and counter-intuitive.
I put in an OCZ Vertex4 512GB SSD and it ran great. Then I changed it to a Samsung EVO 840 500GB SSD. That also ran great. There was nothing wrong with the Vertex I just changed it to see if any difference. The Samsung runs a little faster per benchmarks but could not see the difference in real use. Now you need to copy your entire drive onto your SSD drive. You can’t do this by hand – there are hidden files that need to be copied, so need to make what is called a ‘Clone.’ Apple’s built-in Disk Utility won’t do this so you will need an app like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Using, select your boot drive as the target Disk and then select ‘Backup Everything’: Click ‘Clone’ and your boot disk will be created on the SSD disk. The other option is to use. There’s a free version that will enable to clone your drive.
You think that is too good to be true right? Then, once you have set your preferences, your image will automatically be ready to display your chosen watermark on them. SUCESS: Notes on Installing SSD in 2011 Mac Mini hi all, I replaced the HD in my mac mini with a OWC Electra SSD 6G. Fan speed the same after; there is no sensor to worry about. Make sure to remove black plastic cover off of old hard drive before pulling SATA cable out of old HD; otherwise you won't be able to. The OWC video guide is great, but you don't need to pull out the motherboard; there is just enough room to slide the old HD out and the new one in.
